To be entirely honest, I only read this because I had just seen the movie. And to be a little bit more honest, I actually preferred the movie, and I'm not sure that's saying much. Having Ethan play a bigger role in the film played a big part in my preference, but I think reading on and on about how Rachel thought did not improve her character to me. The ending, which I had hoped would be better and less easily resolved in the book than in the movie, was exactly the same, and not at all an improvement. After weeks and weeks of burning and pining and perishing and not doing anything else besides one moment of vertebrae, it magically gets resolved and that's it. That bit about the dice was the last straw for me, and the point at which I just kept reading to get to the ending, instead of enjoying the ride.
